The Gateway into becoming a Teacher!
Quick Way to get your teaching degree alongside an undergrad degree!
With a concurrent education Degree, you study for 5-6 years and by the end, graduate with a Bed (Bachelor of Education) as well as another undergrad degree (usually Science or Arts). Coming out of the program you can start teaching almost instantly, with well defined studies in education.
What do you learn?
In a concurrent education undergraduate program, students complete both a disciplinary degree and a Bachelor of Education at the same time, combining subject expertise with professional teacher training. On the disciplinary side, students pursue courses in their chosen field—such as English, history, biology, mathematics, psychology, or music—gaining a strong foundation in core concepts, research methods, and critical thinking within their major, while often also taking electives that broaden their knowledge and help prepare them for multiple teachable subjects. Alongside this, the education component introduces them to the theoretical and practical foundations of teaching, including the history and philosophy of education, developmental and learning psychology, and issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Students also learn curriculum design and instructional methods specific to their subject areas, developing skills in lesson planning, assessment, classroom management, and differentiated instruction for diverse learners. A defining feature of concurrent education is the integration of theory and practice through regular field placements, where students gradually progress from observing classrooms to taking on full teaching responsibilities. By the time they graduate, they have not only earned their disciplinary degree but also a Bachelor of Education, making them eligible for teacher certification. This dual focus ensures that graduates leave with both deep subject knowledge and the pedagogical expertise to teach effectively in real-world classrooms.
How to Get into Concurrent Education?
Concurrent education can get very competitive for the top programs. It is recommended to keep an average of 91%+ , and to keep up great extracurriculars and leadership roles. Most ConEd programs have a supplemental which is heavily taken into consideration
Take on Leadership roles, and take on teaching opportunities:
Shadow a Teacher
ODYSSEY - Must know French, great paid teaching experience
Grade 11 and 12 Roadmap for ConEd
Courses: Choose senior-level courses aligned with your intended teaching subjects (e.g., Biology and Chemistry for science, Advanced Functions for math, English and history for humanities). Universities look for “teachable subject” strength, so keep this in mind.
Activities: Step into leadership positions (club exec, student council, sports team captain). Build public speaking and organizational skills.
Steps Toward Teaching: Seek more formal volunteer experiences in educational settings—elementary school helper, classroom volunteer, or youth program leader. Start a tutoring side hustle or volunteer consistently with younger students.
Courses: Take the highest-level courses required for your intended major (e.g., Grade 12 English + history for an Arts pathway, Advanced Functions/Calculus + sciences for a STEM pathway). Keep grades as high as possible since concurrent ed is competitive.
Activities: Continue in leadership roles, ideally in positions that show mentoring/teaching skills.
Steps Toward Teaching: Secure strong references from teachers or community leaders who can speak to your leadership, responsibility, and commitment. Prepare your supplementary application or personal statement by reflecting on your experiences with teaching, tutoring, and youth mentorship.
